Virtual Upgrading Parties

Let's have virtual upgrading parties where we offer admin users to be there for them on IRC and help them upgrading from TWiki to Foswiki.

The idea does not require much. A few of us volunteer - commit to be there during a two hour time slot on IRC on a channel where the upgraders can come and do their upgrade based on the upgrade documentation.

When they get stuck and run into problems they can be assured that 2 or 3 people are there to help him and will spend the time helping to resolve the issues.

The objective is to make upgrades as painless as possible.

To get the ball rolling, sign here if you are willing to commit to a 2 hr timeslot (detailed organisation to follow if enough people show interest)

This idea came up again yesterday in a irc conversation about things we could do to raise foswiki awareness leading up to the SummitHannoverNov2009. I'd like to see if we can renew this idea and here are a couple of ideas of how we could do it:
  • Rather than a one-time event, establish a regular schedule of sessions (1-2 a week?) distributed to accommodate work-hours in different parts of the world.
  • Create a sign-up chart for volunteers so we can see what's covered and users can see who they might direct questions to on irc during these sessions.
  • Create high-visibility announcements on Support and foswiki home page.
I've spoken with quite a few folks who have wanted to upgrade older installations to Foswiki but are intimidated to launch into it. I believe providing this kind community encouragement and support would be a big factor in helping these folks take the leap.

To nudge this idea a little further, I'd like to propose some specific days and time-slots for "upgrading parties" and invite some folks to sign up for these so we can promote them. I would think that we need at least a couple of folks to some slots before we could promote them. I picked these time slots because they work for me and would seem to have good chance of working for both folks in Europe and across US. Feel free to add other slots you think would work.
