As noted in the code, the FTP upload process is optimised using a rather hit-and-miss method. It would be better to generate a checksum for each uploaded file and use that.

Also the FTP upload process doesn't start until file publishing is complete, which means that if the upload is going to fail you don't know about it until the very end. it wuld be better to upload files as soon as they are published.
