Item14853: Provide for sorting on substring prior to formating

It would be an extremely useful feature to be able to sort the list on any one of the specified substrings as defined by the pattern parameter and to apply the sorting prior to formatting as the formatting can introduce leading characters which complicates or invalidates the desired sorting.

This would require introduction of a new parameter called something like sortsubstring that takes a number for one of the substrings defined by pattern parameter.

Based on the response to Item14854, I understand better that the sort parameter is not applied to the formatted output but rather to the list items prior to formatting. This feature would still be useful for providing sorting not just by the first pattern in the list items.

Can you provide a use case where the solution to your problem is not solvable as proposed in Item14854?
