in that case i get the root - topic printed as * TopicName.

following changes work (alt least for me)

%TREEVIEW{web="%WEB%" topic="GrandParent" formatting="outline" format="  * $topic" levelprefix="   "}%
format=" 3 spaces star ....
or
startlevel="1"

and even better:

%TREEVIEW{web="%WEB%" topic="GrandParent" formatting="outline" format="   * [[$topic][$topic]]" levelprefix="   " startlevel="1" }%

in that case topics with non-wiki words work, too
