Did you try entering a
WikiWord as a topic name?

Cunning, hey?
* Thanks team. workaround found: disable
WikiWords checkbox.
* Residual frustration: Why is 'Patterns' not a valid
WikiWord? Yes, I know, but not every topic requires two or more words !!!

See
System.WikiWord] for an explanation what a WikiWord is.
I agree with you that WikiWords are more of a problem than a useful concept. Even more as the "new topic" dialog builds up restrictions rather than being helpful. I'd rather let people create topics like they want to and spare the "allow only wikiwords" checkbox, like "don't make me think".
The only real hard constraint is that you cannot create a page that already is there. But that should be all.
